The Church of Hanko

1892

The Church is situated on "Vartiovuori-Vårdberget". It was originally built of red bricks. The building was completed in 1892 and planned by Architect Jac. Ahrenberg. Behind the altar there is a copy of Bertel Thorvaldsen's the statue of Christ. It was donated to the church by Captain Carl Korsman on the occasion of the consecration of the church on Advent Sunday 1892.

1953

During the war the church was badly damaged. Plans for a new church were made by Bertel Liljeqvist. Furthermore the bricks proved not to be so resistant to the salty coastal climate as had been thought. The church was thoroughly renovated in 1953 and the exterior dates from this time. The church was reconsecrated by Bishop Max Von Bonsdorff.

1971-1974

In 1971 an annex for a separate sacristy was erected. It includes a small chapel for weddings and baptisms. In 1973 the main church building was renovated and partly rebuilt. The plans for this were made by Architect Lars Rejström. The Sanctuary, pulpit, pews, ceiling and floor were all renewed and the interior of the church was decorated. The works of the textile artist Oili Mäki were part of the renovation of 1973. The "Mediator" was placed as the altarpiece and the statue of Christ was placed on the right of the sanctuary. The church was then reconsecrated for the third time in January 1974 by Bishop John Vikström.

1992

The statue of Christ was moved back to its original place behind the altar in 1992. On the occasion of the centenary the church received a model ship of its own, a common feature in coastal towns throughout Scandinavia. Its designer and donor is the former townsman Sigurd Anderssén, M. Sc. The model ship featuring the brig "Hangö" is suspended from the gallery floor and it is 108 cm long. The aquare sailed twomaster was built in 1877 in Bromarf and had a length of 36 meters.

2004

The latest reform in 2004 was the choir window, designed by Architect Gunnel M. Helander and Glass Designer Carita Heinrichs.

The Church Organ

The organ was built in 1965 by the German organ builder Paul Ott. The organ has 29 stops on 3 manuals and a pedalboard. The tracer action is mechanical. The dispositions were made by Professor Enzio Forsblom. Both the design and the sound of the organ represent the North German Baroque Style.
